Wendy's - Bridgeton, MO
Blanton Construction completed the first LEED certified Wendy’s in October 2010 in Bridgeton, Missouri. Located in a suburb of St. Louis, the building is a standard Wendy’s design that incorporated elements required to be LEED certified; from special exterior lighting and building materials, to the site location, which is in an urban setting and on public transportation lines. The project was delivered on time and within budget parameters.
Wendy’s restaurants have been energy efficient for years. However, a few modifications to the standard restaurant design had to be made in order to meet strict LEED standards. Some of the design enhancements include:
- Special building materials made from recycled materials for wall coverings and floor tile.
- Recycling bins for plastic, glass, metal, paper and cardboard;
- Signage in the restaurant that educates customers about the environment and how this restaurant is eco-friendly
- Landscaping with native plants which need no irrigation or fertilizer
- Rain garden created to ensure water is filtrated on site and does not add to urban run-off;
- Exterior lighting with LED fixtures to save energy;
- Preferred parking spaces for low-emitting and fuel-efficient vehicles; and carpooling customers
- Where possible, materials used in the building were processed and manufactured within 500 miles of Bridgeton, MO.

PNC BANK – 3526 PAGE BLVD; ST. LOUIS, MO
Blanton Construction completed a tenant improvement to an end cap of an existing building shell for PNC Financial Services in 2009. By working with the project team to complete the architectural finishes, plumbing, HVAC, and electrical work we helped our client achieve a LEED Certified rating for the new building. Blanton Construction was able to meet the strict criteria of the client and complete the project on time and within budget parameters. Some of the sustainable design concepts utilized in building construction include:
- High fly ash Concrete
- High efficiency HVAC equipment.
- 10% recycled content for architectural finishes.
- Adherence to an economy of means in materials, products, packaging and finishing.
- Purchasing materials from local manufacturers.
- Construction site recycling program and waste management plan.
- Selection of nontoxic and low-sink-value materials.
- Avoidance of material choices that are not from sustainable sources or which cause excessive consumption, waste or pollution.
- Material choices that provide longevity and durability (including minimal maintenance).
- Material selection that provides for a significant degree of reused/recycled content (with an emphasis on post- consumer material) as well as a significant amount of recyclable content.
- Special building materials made from recycled materials for wall coverings and floor tile.
- Lighting with LED fixtures to save energy;

What is a LEED?
What exactly is LEED? It stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. It's a certification program which evaluates and recognizes "best-in-class building strategies and practices". For a building to be LEED certified, the building project must satisfy certain prerequisites and then, after meeting certain criteria, can earn points to achieve specific levels of certification. The number of points that a project earns is how the level of LEED certification is determined.
LEED is changing the way everyone in the building industry thinks about construction, energy, efficiency, and how the new building fits into its surroundings and the community as well. It also considers long term maintenance goals and costs.
